More than 150 schools were damaged by landslides and floods triggered by the continuous rainfall on September 27 and 28 in Kavrepalanchok district.
According to the Education Development and Coordination Unit, Kavrepalanchok, floods and landslides damaged 170 schools in 12 of 13 local levels in the district. Unit Chief Devaka Dhakal said that local levels informed them that 170 schools were damaged. However, some schools might have been left out. Therefore, local authorities had been requested to update the statistics of schools in their respective areas, She added.
She said, “Based on the data received, most schools have been completely damaged, some have had their roofs collapse while the boundary walls and fences have been destroyed in other schools. Landslides have occurred near some schools and in others, floodwaters have entered the classrooms.” She said that since schools were currently closed for Dashain and Tihar festivals, efforts were being coordinated with local authorities to create an environment for regular classes by the time schools reopen after Tihar. “Currently, we are analysing the data of the damaged schools that have been received at the office.
Although the local levels have uploaded the data of damaged schools into the Integrated Educational Management Information System (IEMIS), further information about the number of Temporary Learning Centres (TLCs) to be built and other necessary infrastructures will be determined.” She said that 15 schools in Panauti Municipality, three schools in Banepa Municipality, 12 schools in Panchkhal Municipality, nine schools in Mandandeupur Municipality, 28 schools in Dhulikhel Municipality and 14 schools in Namobuddha Municipality were damaged. Similarly, 10 schools in Bhumlu Rural Municipality, 28 schools in Chaurideurali Rural Municipality, seven schools in Temal Rural Municipality, 13 schools in Roshi Rural Municipality, four schools in Khanikhola Rural Municipality and 26 schools in Bethanchowk Rural Municipality were damaged.
The floods and landslides have caused damage to school buildings, toilets, drinking water facilities, play-grounds, fences and classrooms.
