Democratic republican system has no alternative: President Deuba

Kathmandu: President of the Nepali Congress (NC) Sher Bahadur Deuba has asserted that there is no alternative of the federal democratic republic system of governance having inclusive representation of all sections.

In his address to an interaction programme entitled ‘change brought out to the status by the system’ organized on the occasion of the 30th anniversary and 27th general assembly of the Democratic Thought Society, Deuba expressed his commitment to take strides based on collaboration and coordination by correcting weaknesses in the system.

Deuba, also the former Prime Minister, noted that a coalition government was formed between the first and second largest parties in parliament since no party has garnered a majority due to the inclusive proportional electoral system in the country.

He highlighted the need to address the shortcomings of the current government and focus on people-centered development.

‘After the restoration of democracy in Nepal and the establishment of a government under the leadership of Girija Prasad Koirala in 2048 BS, much progress has been made in various sectors such as roads, irrigation, health, and drinking water. Development under the democratic governance system has begun to gain momentum,’ he stated.

Deuba also mentioned that the government has organized the Sagarmatha Sambaad (Everest Dialogue) to work on mitigating impacts of global warming on drinking water, mountains, and other areas.

NC leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala drew government’s attention to the urgency of commissioning a study on what type of money is coming to the country in the name of remittances.

He emphasized that the government should take the issue of Nepal being on the Financial Task Force’s grey list seriously. He asked the economists to carry out a research whether there is any connection between delay in the appointment of the Governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank appears to be related to the need for research and study to clarify that remittances are not the reason.

Regarding the appointment of the Governor, Koirala claimed that the constitution and laws are being violated and urged the government to formulate and implement policies to reduce bad governance, impunity, and rising unemployment. He stated that employment can be generated in Nepal through the promotion of religious and spiritual tourism and emphasized that the government should develop special plans in this regard. Congress leader Arjun Nar Singh KC mentioned that there should be the rule of law in democracy, asserting that good governance cannot exist without the rule of law. Recently, statistics published by the World Justice Project showed that Nepal is in a state of minus 48 percent.

Former Minister Dr. Suresh Mall emphasized that the Democratic Thought Society should advocate for the truth. Former President of the Society Harihar Dahal stated that when Sher Bahadur Deuba was Prime Minister in 1996, trying to bring in the Pajero culture distorted politics, and clarified that no government has the right to engage in wrongdoing as the society opposed it through a decision. Another former President of the Society, Dr. Kedar Nar Singh KC, mentioned that the society is committed to the institutional development of democratic values. Senior journalist Purushottam Dahal expressed that the same person should not be continued in political leadership. Society President Kulchandra Wagley stated that the system has brought about change. Senior Vice President Iswariraj Laudari, General Secretary Basudev Bhattarai, and others mentioned that the society, established on May 17, 1995, has been advocating for the institutional development of democracy.
