Groundbreaking of Lekhnath–Damauli 220 kV Transmission Line Marks Major Nepal–Germany Energy Partnership

Damauli-The groundbreaking ceremony of the Lekhnath–Damauli 220 kV Transmission Line Project was held in Damauli on Thursday, marking a significant milestone in the long-standing energy cooperation between Nepal Electricity Authority and German development partners.

The project is being implemented in collaboration with the German Embassy and development agencies including GIZ Nepal and KfW Development Bank. It is jointly financed by the governments of Nepal and Germany, with a total investment of EUR 100 million, of which Germany is contributing approximately EUR 50 million as a grant.

According to officials, the project will involve the construction of a 45-kilometer, 220 kV double-circuit transmission line, along with modern gas-insulated substations in Lekhnath and Damauli. With an estimated transmission capacity of around 1,000 megawatts, the infrastructure is expected to significantly improve the efficiency and reliability of electricity distribution, particularly for hydropower.

The transmission line is aimed at strengthening Nepal’s power system by ensuring stable and uninterrupted electricity supply to households, schools, hospitals, and businesses. It is also expected to support growing energy demand, reduce power outages, and contribute to local economic development by creating a more reliable energy environment.

Officials highlighted that the use of advanced technologies such as double-circuit lines and gas-insulated substations will help optimize land use while minimizing environmental and community disruption. The improved infrastructure is also expected to enhance public service delivery in sectors such as healthcare, education, and water supply.

The project forms part of broader efforts to promote clean and sustainable energy in Nepal by enabling the efficient transmission of hydropower across regions. Stakeholders noted that the initiative will contribute to long-term economic growth and climate-friendly development.

German development partners reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Nepal’s energy sector, emphasizing continued cooperation to build a reliable, sustainable, and climate-resilient power system for the future.
