Kathmandu: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Jagdish Kharel, has said artificial intelligence (AI) is essential for holistic development of the country.
In his address to a programme on ‘AI for Inclusive Growth: Building Nepal AI-ready Future’ in the federal capital on Friday, Minister Kharel said government had given top priority to the development and use of AI. Leveraging AI can help us bridge the digital divide, he added.
National AI Council and the National AI Centre have been established in line with AI Policy, 2082, he said, adding that the government is clear on making use of AI inclusive, ethical, safe and beneficial. “Our AI Policy is clear and based on principles. So, we’re for make AI use inclusive, safe and beneficial,” Minister Kharel reminded.
He further shared that with the expansion of digital literacy, digital divide would be bridged and women, youth and marginalized community empowered. Data privacy and responsible innovation would be promoted.
“We’ve have prioritized use of AI in important sectors like agriculture, health, education and tourism. A favourable atmosphere is being created to spur start-up so that financial benefits created by AI would be reaped by the youths,” Minister Kharel explained.
However, the Minister said such ambition cannot be realized with lone effort of government. So, the collaboration among private sector, academia and international partnership is imperative.
He commented that the deep relations between Nepal and India have created a solid foundation for cooperation in the sector of research, skills development and know exchange.
